The Metatarsal Bones present a knuckle of bone and joint on
the bottom of the ball of the foot. With age and use; the soft tissue padding under the ball of your foot wears down. The Metatarsal bone and joint, gets closer to the skin on the bottom of your foot.
At first a callous will form, then Metatarsal pain caused by bursitis, capsulitis, neuritis or synovitis of the metatarsal joint complex may follow.
Signs and Symptoms include the development of either or both
a superficial shearing callous in flexible metatarsal conditions and thick, deep callous with a core or root in rigid high arch conditions. High heels add to and create many of these.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Everyone has a certain Foot Type which determines how their
foot functions. The Podiatrist is skilled in the complete biomechanical evaluation of your feet and gait. Knowing what your foot type is, at any age, allows the podiatrist to prevent
the development of structural deformities.
Diagnosis is done through physical and biomechanical evaluation. We often use X-Rays and Gait analysis, along with thorough orthopedic evaluation, including range of motion studies of the major joints, responsible for stance and gait. Occasionally MRI studies are very helpful.
Treatment depends on many variables. Location of the problem, degree of severity, age and shoe choices all affect the decisions for your treatment. A conversation with our doctor will give you a realistic approach to your successful treatment. Options for
therapy include but are not limited to:
-Regular Podiatry Care (4-12 wks)
-Shoe modifications
-Padding, strapping and taping
-Arch Supports and Orthotic Devices
-Physical Therapy In Office
-Anti-inflammatory medications
-Oral and Injectible medications
-Surgical correction when necessary |
